How refreshing to have a drama built entirely around the sweet, realistic development of a modern romance between two professional adults, while cutting out the aggravation, angst, and filler that often pad out a drama’s running time. The relationships that spring up between the five housemates are fresh, winsome, and complicated in a nicely satisfying way. Story drove me nuts. If only we got there!

Should’ve been more moving, more powerful, more sensical. Draggy plot, painfully green acting. Namgoong Min is delightfully weird, and Minah cutely offbeat. The “mystery” is overplayed and the chaebols are fairly one- note, but turn your brain off in those scenes and the show is good breezy fun. Feel- good and satisfying.

Hits that rom- com sweet spot. Akin to an emotional drive- by. Perhaps more violent. Still, the leads have adorable chemistry. This one has comedy, a nice episodic pace, and most importantly, a lot of heart.

One of my all- time faves. Yeah, good luck with that. Cute, sexy, and fun.

The fandom frenzy was sometimes more fun than the show itself. By all accounts this should have been a disaster, but the sum of its parts is better than you’d think—you’ll be screaming at your screen while reaching for the next episode.

Nothing new, but a good family drama with a fresh- faced foursome in a compelling love square. There isn’t much actual plot, but it’s an introspective watch with heartwarming relationships. Simple but sweet.

Messy execution can dull the shine from the coming- of- age poignancy, but the feel- good nature has a way of warming the cockles. Worth a watch for the performances, though I wish the action was as good as the written material. But the story lost focus and the production was thrown into backstage turmoil late in the game, fizzling out disappointingly. Had enough plot for eight episodes, but at twenty, it stretched my patience thin, despite my love for the amazing cast. Action, intrigue, humor, heart. Now I want every drama to be as badass and heartfelt. Damn you, City Hunter!

Features loose plotting and a light feel, though second half gets heavier. At times cheeky, at times poignant. Standout soundtrack. It’s too bad that only half the story was engaging (hers), while the other half suffered from bad writing (his).

Adorable main couple, great supporting cast, easy to zip through. Fun rapport between the agency family, breezy romance, and well- used cameos keep things zippy. A heavy hitter emotionally, though not in angst- ridden or melodramatic ways. It depicts the heartbreaking moments in everyday life, told in phenomenal performances by dramaland veterans. Sometimes hard to watch, but often rewarding.

Jae Hee is wonderful, and the directing is sharp. A sentimental favorite. Plot wasn’t much to speak of, but it had that sweet romance, endearing military bromance, and charming Song Joong- ki. Not really my cup of tea, but I recognize that it had a magic touch. But it also flows lightly and easily, making it a crowd- pleaser with a cast of mostly likable characters and a few who are fun to hate. Satisfying and feel- good.

Do they make a pill for that? Champ (2. 01. 0). But the best thing about it?

That camera. Made every shot moody, crisp, and stunning. And there’s no denying the idea itself was intriguing. But taken straight, as a drama?

More pain than fun. A showcase for its idol cast; if only they were better actors, it could’ve been even better. Earnest in the best way. It tries both too hard and not enough.

The adult storylines had great potential, but landed in a spin cycle of the same conflict for dozens and dozens of episodes. I watched with fervor but am still waiting for my refund for the hours I spent. Slick and beautifully shot, but emotionally feels empty. Cute, but forgettable. A fascinating look at how money corrupts, with memorable performances. Pacing was sluggish, the characters frustratingly dislikable.

This is a remake that got it all wrong. Main couple is sweet, but it’s really the ex- girlfriends with strong personalities who add the pep and zing. Kang Ji- hwan is the only good thing here. At least the leads and their romantic connection hold up their end; the rest tends to plod along.

Only I wouldn’t sit through all the episodes again. It did lose steam toward the end and the romance took on an oddly juvenile bent, emotionally. But sweet and enjoyable overall. Its humor overdoes the slapstick, but the Hong sisters writers keep the plot moving. The humor lost me, and the chemistry never went past tepid.

It didn’t help that I hated the main character. Takes some frustrating plot turns that may have you reaching for something to break. As SBS’s banner show for its makjang- free policy, it tries a little too hard to be so free of conflict that it errs on the side of bland.

Vanilla, but sweet. The first half is pitch- perfect, balancing humor and insight; the second half drags. Wish the plot hadn’t lost steam in the end. Jung Il- woo is a hoot. Plot spins its wheels a bit, but it’s sweet and funny. Cheeky in the best way.

Witty with a touch of dark humor. Set in a funeral home, it gives lovely, quirky insights on life and death. Pleasant, with gorgeous leads Won Bin and Fukada Kyoko, but unexceptional. It’s overrated (plot becomes repetitive), but enjoyable. This show has major stones, venturing dark and grim to fearless degrees. It’s not perfect—though its grand, stirring culmination more than makes up for earlier missteps. The slow pace and lack of surprise can be frustrating, but it offers an intensive psychological study of some damaged characters.

Doesn’t have time to really get you in the heart, but sets up a great world. If this is the future of cable, I’m onboard. The plot’s just there as a vehicle for the acting and the cute. Plot’s overly convoluted, but strong performances and speedy pace keep it exciting.

What could go wrong? OH, THAT ENDING. Too bad the plot spun itself into a destructive tornado. Then I’ll be forced to answer. Oh, who are we kidding; Jung Il- woo, it’s all your fault. I want my hours back.

Banking isn’t that sexy, but the writing and performances are solid. Black (2. 01. 6).

Not that I can defend the show, not even for the actors, who are normally so much better.

Even on the big screen. Being a motion picture fanatic, I like to watch movies not only for entertainment value, but I really enjoy ones that have a powerful messaging ingrained into it.

With the assistance of Abe Karatz and some excellent salesmanship on his own part, he obtains funding and begins to build his factory. The whole movie also has many parallels with director Coppola’s own efforts to build a new movie studio of his own. Big Takeaway: Make success your only option. Summary: Times are tough in a New York real- estate office and 4 salesmen are given a strong incentive by Blake to succeed in a sales contest. First prize is a Cadillac Eldorado, second prize is a set of steak knives, third prize is the sack!

There is no room for losers in this dramatically masculine world; only “closers” will get the good sales leads. There is a lot of pressure to succeed, so a robbery is committed which has unforeseen consequences for all the characters. Big Takeaway: Determination and heart will get you further than talent. Summary: Rudy is a true story about Dan Ruettiger, an aspiring Notre Dame football player and his struggles to make it. Rudy grew up in a steel mill town where most people invested a lifetime into hard labor.

With poor grades, mediocre athletic skill, and half the physical size of the other players, Rudy shows he can overcome all challenges with spirit and drive. Big Takeaway: Life is like a box of chocolates. Yet, despite all the things he has attained, his one true love eludes him. When he was a young boy, William Wallace’s father and brother, along with many others, lost their lives trying to free Scotland. Once he loses another of his loved ones, William Wallace begins his long quest to earn Scotland’s freedom from English rule around the end of the 1. Wallace leads the people of his country into a outnumber battle and never looses sight for what he believes in.

Big Takeaway: The journey is everything. Summary: Jerry Maguire used to be a typical sports agent: willing to do just about anything he could to get the biggest possible contracts for his clients, plus a nice commission for himself. Then, one day, he suddenly has second thoughts about what he’s really doing. When he voices these doubts, he ends up losing his job and all of his clients, save Rod Tidwell, an egomaniacal football player. Can Jerry resurrect his career while still staying true to himself? Big Takeaway: The 9- 5 may not get you very far. Summary: Peter Gibbons is a cubicle- dwelling employee stuck in the rat race.

His girlfriend is cheating on him, he has an obnoxious neighbor, and he’s completely miserable with his job as a small cog in a company called Initech. Then he visits a hypnotherapist, who put Peter into a state of complete bliss. Free of worrying about making a living, he no longer feels the need to keep his job, just as the company is going through a massive downsizing. However, his new attitude only makes him more valuable in the company’s eyes. Big Takeaway: Copying may just mean good business. Summary: From the obscure dorm- room and backyard origins to their very public battle for corporate supremacy, recap the journey of Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Apple co- founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak — the former a crafty Harvard dropout, the latter a pair of hippies with jobs at Hewlett- Packard and a yen to sell miniature versions of corporate mainframes to small businesses and at- home enthusiasts. The former plot thread recounts how Jobs and Wozniak “borrowed” key concepts from a Xerox computer lab, eked out their success as counter- cultural businessmen.

Big Takeaway: Selling will close one deal, caring will change your life. Summary: A morally decent college dropout finds himself at conflict with his harsh federal judge father. From running a profitable underground casino, he gets a job as a stock broker and gets on the fast track to success. The firm is full of hard- nosed young go- getters striving to make it rich.

Only things take a turn for the worst when he learns that his job isn’t what’s it cracked up to be. Big Takeaway: We all are one. Summary: Suburban Virginia schools have been segregated for generations, in sight of the Washington Monument over the river in the nation’s capital. One Black and one White high school are closed and the students sent to T. C. Williams High School under federal mandate to integrate. The year is seen through the eyes of the football team where the man hired to coach the Black school is made head coach over the highly successful white coach. Based on the actual events of 1.

Big Takeaway: The only thing greater than the power of the mind is the courage of the heart. Summary: From the heights of notoriety to the depths of depravity, John Forbes Nash, Jr. A mathematical genius, he made an astonishing discovery early in his career and stood on the brink of international acclaim. But the handsome and arrogant Nash soon found himself on a painful and harrowing journey of self- discovery. After many years of struggle, he eventually triumphed over his tragedy, and finally – late in life – received the Nobel Prize. Big Takeaway: Cut corners to easy street and it can cost you everything.

Summary: I had to include my favorite gangsta flick in this list. George Jung is the son of a struggling small business owner. Seeing his family struggle to make ends meet and failing, George vows never to share a similar fate. Moving to California, he starts his own pot pushing operation in which he finds both success and imprisonment. In prison, he meets a cellmate who introduces him to the lucrative new market in cocaine.

Upon release, George Jung quickly becomes a druglord moving masses of narcotics. However, for all the fabulous wealth and power he gained, the true costs of his dangerously treacherous occupation catch up with him in ways from which he would never recover. Big Takeaway: Through our failures we become a greater success. Summary: Friends since high school, 2. Kaleil Isaza Tuzman and Tom Herman have an idea: a Web site for people to conduct business with municipal governments. This documentary tracks the rise and fall of gov. Works. com from May of 1.
